Not to be confused with Sam Raimi’s flamboyantly stylized Western of the same name, this made-for-cable adaptation of the Louis L’Amour novel is a lean, taut pioneer adventure set in the wilderness of the northern Midwest. Sam Elliott, sporting his trademark bushy mustache and eyebrows so thick they keep the rains off his face, stars as the mountain man and tracker Con Vallian. Tom Conti is Scottish storekeeper Duncan McKaskel bringing his wife Susanna (Kate Capshaw) and son from Pennsylvania to a homestead in Wyoming. When a scraggly gang (led by the wonderfully sleazy Matt Clark) marks the family as an easy target, Vallian makes himself their gruff guardian angel, partly out of attraction to Susanna (“You’re a handsome woman,” he likes to repeat). Pride, jealousy, and rivalry make Duncan and Vallian uneasy allies and Conti’s musical lilt is a marvelous contrast to Elliot’s gravely drawl. Capshaw is somewhat colorless but comes to life in a surprising explosion of angry violence. A wicked ice princess sets out to freeze and capture Earth for her planetary collection. But Sailor Moon and her tight-knit group of gal pals will have nothing of the sort. Paced more for the love story fan, this episode focuses on a handsome young astronomer, Kakeru, who discovers a mysterious crystal needed by Princess Snow Kaguya to carry out her plan. Soon after finding the crystal, Kakeru develops a deep friendship with Luna (Sailor Moon’s cat), a friendship that eventually leads to the Sailors’ discovery of the Earth’s predicament and to each character’s discovery of the tremendous powers of love and justice–all in about an hour.

Despite its slower pace, this feature incorporates all the positive qualities other Sailor Moon episodes share: sharp, eye-catching artwork; humorous but heartfelt communication among the girls; an understandable plot line; and plenty of flashy transforming. Further enhancements include an intelligent soundtrack (a nice balance of kooky sci-fi and seriously beautiful tunes) and the introduction of the “Outer Senshi.” This slightly older, more mature group of young women–Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto–join our regular band of bubble-spraying, crescent-beaming skirt tossers to melt the ice princess once and for all. The dubbed movie (tagged with the new title of Hearts in Ice) is an edited version of the subtitled film. Some language and violence (a few frames) have been altered. Due to the inclusion of mild nudity (imagine a spinning, naked Barbie), parents may want to think twice before offering this movie to fans younger than 6. Shot in sunny Toronto and set to a dreamy score, Lie With Me looks and sounds like an art film, but the end result isn’t quite so lofty. The plot is thin and the dialogue superfluous, but no matter–Canada’s Clément Virgo (Love Come Down) just wants to turn you on and he has enlisted two attractive, uninhibited young performers to assist in his aims. Leila (Lauren Lee Smith, The L Word) and David (Eric Balfour, Six Feet Under) meet at a party. He’s with his girlfriend, but finds himself drawn to her. The feeling is mutual. She’s alone, but quickly finds an unattached hipster with whom to have a tryst. David catches her in the act. Instead of turning away, he watches. They start seeing each other immediately afterwards. “I’m not hooked on danger, [I'm] hooked on sex,” Leila claims, but she isn’t exactly the most trustworthy narrator. She wants a purely physical relationship, while David wants something more. They return to their old lives, but the obsession refuses to die. Based on the novella by Virgo’s partner, Tamara Berger, Lie With Me plays like a low-budget cross between Adrian Lyne’s overrated 9 1/2 Weeks and Wayne Wang’s underrated The Center of the World. –Kathleen C.
